Modern Foreign Languages Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2

We place high importance on the teaching of a modern foreign language in school. The chosen language is currently French; due to this being the subject that the majority of our children move on to study in their secondary schools.

A professional linguist is employed to deliver our French curriculum. The teacher is experienced in providing fun and comprehensive sessions that have been specifically planned and designed with the new curriculum in mind.

French lessons give our children the ability:-

  • To understand the culture of the countries in which the language is spoken
  • To speak confidently in the language
  • To write imaginatively in the language
  • To read the language fluently

All children in KS1 and KS2 have French as part of their weekly curriculum.

Pupils in Year 1 & 2 are taught greetings, names of animals, colours, days of the week, simple conversation and basic numbers with a greater emphasis on using a variety of practical and inventive activities to aid their learning. During Key Stage 1, they will listen and respond to songs, rhymes and familiar stories and television shows. These approaches encourage active learning as children explore language together in games, songs and gain the confidence to showcase what they have learnt.

In KS 2, 6 different units are taught, one for each half term at 4 different levels too. Each half term acts as a foundation for the next, allowing children to build vocabulary as well as applied use. Children will learn to hold simple conversations using a range of vocabulary types. They will also develop greater understanding of the cultural diversity of language and learn about the different countirs where French is spoken.
