Phonics, Literacy and Maths Home Learning WB 25.01.21

20 Jan 2021

Hi Unicorns,

Here you will find your phonics, literacy and maths tasks for this week. Please note that I will be teaching the literacy lesson on Thursday this week so please do not complete this activity before then. If you have any questions about any aspect of the learning or you would like hard copies of the work then please drop me an email and I can sort this for you. Remember that we have our daily morning zoom sessions at 9:40am.
I have been so impressed with everyone's sensible attitudes to their learning so far, Miss Banks and I are so proud of how mature and grown up you are all getting!

Thanks
Miss C

Phonics Learning
L.O. To learn to read and write words using the new sounds this week.
Please watch the Read, Write, Inc videos on Youtube each day (please review the Useful Help Documents section of the unicorn area for a guide to use this). The videos are uploaded onto Youtube every day at 9:30. You should watch the speed sound lesson (either set 1 or set 2) then the accompanying spelling or word time video which will come on immediately after the speed sound video. Please follow the link here to find the RWI Ruth Miskin page.
If your child is confident with all of the set 1 sounds then they can move onto the set 2 sounds lessons on the same Youtube page.

If your child has now completed set 2 phonics and is confident with these sounds then please follow the link here to find phonics activities for this week that they can complete.

Literacy Learning - I will teach this lesson on Thursday at 2pm
L.O. To write a list of energy saving actions you could take at home.
Think about the learning from Tuesday in our KUW lesson about climate change and the polar regions. We discussed that the world is getting warmer and warmer.  We learnt that, as humans, we are causing the earth to get hotter due to the way we live our lives by driving cars, flying to different countries and using lots of electricity, and even by throwing out food that we don't want to eat.

Task 1
Our challenge is to find out ways that we can help, have a think about what you could do and talk to a grown up about it. You might think about walking or cycling more, or not going on as many far away holidays, or turning off the lights in your home when you aren't in a room. We are going to talk about these things we can do on our zoom session. Then you are going to create a list of actions you could take to help. Remember to use your phonics knowledge to sound out all of the words (if you have learnt the set 2 sounds then you should be able to have a go at most words by yourself). You can use your sound cards to help with any letters you are unsure about.

Optional task 2
Once you have completed this you could create a poster to help remind people of things they can do to help prevent global warming. Have a look at these posters linked here for some ideas of what you could write.

Guided reading sessions are on a Tuesday and Thursday at 1:15pm. If you are unsure which reading group your child is in then please drop me an email

Maths Learning
L.O. To compare mass and capacity.
We are now entering into the final week of our theme 'Alive in Five'. We will be looking at comparing mass and capacity. We will be using words like heavier, lighter, heaviest and lightest to compare different weights. We will be estimating which objects are heavier and lighter and then comparing them using scales. We will also be using language like full, empty, half full and nearly empty. We will be comparing the capacity of different containers around our homes.
You will find the link for this week's maths activities below, first watch the video then complete the attached activity.
