Hi Giants!

If you are off school or school is closed, I will add some work to this page each week for you to get on with in your purple home books. Please make sure each piece of work has a date and a learning objective, neatly underlined. Please trim printed sheets and stick in neatly. We want our home books to be as beautiful and proud as our books in school! :)

Literacy - The Twits
 

Please follow the steps so that, by the end of the week, the children have written a character description of Mr and Mrs Twit in the style of Roald Dahl. 

1. Learning Objective: To choose our favourite words and phrases.
Read the extracts about Mr Twit and Mrs Twit on pages 5-6 of this link. Children may need a little support to read this as our whole-class texts are slightly above the reading average levels of the class. Choose your favourite words/phrases that Roald Dahl uses to describe each character and record them in a table with 'Mr Twit' and 'Mrs Twit' at the top. For an extension, you could use a computer or thesaurus to find good synonyms for your words.

2. Learning Objective: To write a character description in the style of Roald Dahl.
Use what you have learnt to write a description of Mr Twit and Mrs Twit in your very best writing. Use this word mat to help with ideas for vocabulary and sentence starters. Our writing targets for this task are as follows:

Red Challenge (easy): Write independently, re-read to check it makes sense, use good adjectives.
Amber Challenge (middle): Use simile (e.g. his beard sticks out like a nailbrush), ask questions to the reader (e.g. when did he wash his beard?)
Green Challenge (hard): Structure in paragraphs with an indent at the start (e.g. one paragraph for each character)

Maths

This week, we have been learning about time, and how to tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes. Our method for telling the time is:

1) Look at the minute hand and decide if it is a 'PAST' time or a 'TO' time (depends which side of the clock it is on)
2) For a PAST time - count in fives from the top up to the minute hand to see how many minutes PAST it is
    For a TO time - count in fives from the minute hand TO the top to see how many minutes TO the next hour.
3) Look at the hour hand to see which hour we are going PAST or going TO.

Theme

LO: To say where is usually warmer in the UK and why
Please watch the weather forecast on the TV or computer and use the temperatures to complete these worksheets:
1. Prediction and Method   2. Results and Conclusion

When you make your conclusions and try to explain WHY some places are warmer, think about: 
- Where is closer to the equator? The sun shines directly onto the equator.
- Where has lots of mountains? It's colder in mountains!
- Where is busier? Lots of people can make it feel warmer.
- Where has tall buildings? Tall buildings can trap hot air between them.



Science

LO: To say how exercise affects our bodies

Exercise Worksheet     Rate your energy and happiness levels before exercise, and measure your heart rate too (how many beats does it do in one minute). Do some exercise and then repeat the questions after exercise. Write about what you notice is different. On the second page, there's some vocabulary, sentence starters and information to help you.

Why is Exercise Important?    Read the presentation and make a poster about why it's important to do exercise.
