Hi Giants!

I can't believe it's already the last week of the half term! It's definitely been the strangest half term ever, but I hope you've still been enjoying your learning and having a nice time being with your family. We're learning about a new historical figure this week, who I think you'll really enjoy... I'm also excited to share my FAVOURITE science experiment with you. Hope you like it as much as I do! :)

Literacy: Biographies
Our Literacy work this week goes with our Theme work on Key Figures (Neil Armstrong this week). You may wish to complete the Theme work before task 3 so you have more ideas to put in your biography.

1. Learning Objective: To answer simple comprehension questions
Choose the reading level you are comfortable with. Read the information about Neil Armstrong and answer the questions that follow. Remember to underline key words in the question, then scan the page to looks for those words to help you find the answer.

2. Learning Objective: To do my own research and pick out important information
We are going to write a biography about Neil Armstrong. A biography tells you about the important things that happen in someone's life. For your biography, you are going to need lots of information about Neil Armstrong! Read the information pages below (ask an adult for help if you need to) and make notes on these 4 categories:

1. Early Life   (When was he born? Where did he live? Who were his family? What did he like to do as a child?)
2. Education and Career   (Where did he go to university? What did he learn? What jobs did he do before NASA?)
3. NASA   (When did he join? How did he train? Which missions did he do first? Were they successful?)
4. Apollo 11   (When did the mission start? When did they land? Who was there? How did it work?)

You don't have to answer all those questions, they are just there to give you ideas. Record your information however you like. You might split your page into 4, or you could do 4 seperate spider diagrams. Remember, you don't need to record whole sentences for notes, just the important information and key words.

3. Learning Objective: To write a biography in the right order
Now, use the information to write your own biography about Neil Armstrong. Remember to make sure you put in all your key facts. Make sure your biography goes in time order - this is called chronological order. You can choose how you want to structure it - here are some things you could do:

- Put key dates and facts (e.g. date of birth, date of death) at the start, or in a box
- Use sub-headings to divide it up into sections
- Write in paragraphs, starting a new paragraph for each new part of his life

4. Extra Learning Tasks (optional)
- Find out a little about Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, the two other astronauts on Apollo 11! Use your information to make mini-factfiles.
- Imagine you have chance to interview Neil Armstrong. Write down which questions you'd ask him. You could even act out the interview with your family, or do the same for the other astronauts.

Maths – Addition and Subtraction
If you would like any additional input or activities for these Maths sessions, the content on the BBC Bitesize home learning website now matches up perfectly with the White Rose learning objectives (Monday on Bitesize is Lesson 1, Tuesday is Lesson 2, etc). 

1. Learning Objective: To record and solve multiplication with the 'x' symbol      (old learning)

Key Learning/Tips
- Multiplication is like repeated addition, e.g. 5 x 2 = "5 lots of 2" = 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2
- For the addition number sentences, you should be adding the same number again and again.
- You may want to use counters or drawings to help visualise the later questions.
- For Q5, children may wish to use the inverse to work out the answers as we do this in Fluency.

2. Learning Objective: To use arrays for multiplication      (old learning)

Key Learning/Tips
- When we do arrays, we can think of the 'x' symbol to mean "rows of" e.g. 3 x 4 is "3 rows of 4"
- This time, we count the number in each row to help us make the repeated addition.
- Remember, multiplication can be done either way you could also count the columns instead! 
- Remember when you make your own array that they must have the same number in each row/column.

3. Learning Objective: To solve 2 times table facts in different ways      (old learning)

Key Learning/Tips
- For Q4, remember, "___ =" is like saying "what is". Just work out the other side!
- If you see "___ x" we can say "how many lots of", e.g. __ x 2 = 22  ("how many lots of 2 makes 22?")
- Remember you can swap the numbers in a multiplication round if that helps.
- Q6 is challenging! I'd recommend using counters (or any small objects) to support with grouping.

4. Learning Objective: To solve 5 times table facts in different ways     (old learning)

Key Learning/Tips
- For number lines, each jump is '1 group' (e.g. in 1a, the number line shows "3 jumps of 5")
- For Q6, work out each part seperately THEN add them. Remember to choose a good method to add.

5. Extra Learning Tasks (optional)
- Play some number games to practice 2, 5 and 10 times tables to try and learn them off by heart... Move onto 3s of 4s if you do!

Science: Plants

Learning Objective: To understand what happens to water inside a plant
Have a look at this investigation to learn about the how water travels through a plant. You might want to complete the experiment at home too! You can find more information about the experiment on this website :)

Optional Extra Activities: 
- Try to plant some seeds without watering them and see what happens!
- Take the celery experiment one step further by splitting the bottom of the stem and placing each half in a different coloured cup of water. What happens to the colours as they travel up the stem and reach the leaves?
- Do some research about the cactus plant. How does it survive in the desert without much water?

Theme (History): Key Figures

Learning Objective: To know the key events that led to the moon landing
Our next ‘key figure’ is Neil Armstrong! He is famous for being the first ever astronaut to walk on the moon in 1969, and your English work this week will help you to learn lots about him. Things like landing on the moon don’t just happen – there’s lots of smaller steps and practice needed beforehand! After the moon landing, astronauts wanted to keep exploring space even further, so lots more exciting space travel happened after the moon landing too. Please read this Space Travel Timeline then choose an activity:

a) Cut out these cards of the important events, jumble them up and put them into the correct order. Write a little bit about which events you think were the most important to prepare for the moon landing and why.

b) Choose the events from the timeline you think are most important and use them to make your own timeline with labels and pictures. You could use one of these templates or draw your own timeline like we did for Florence Nightingale.

c) Research one of the events in more detail and write your own news article about it, for example: DOG GOES TO SPACE!! You could write on this template if you want to make it look professional.

Optional Extra Activities: 
- Have a look at the Missions section of the NASA website to find out what space missions are happening at the moment. You could add some onto your timeline! My favourite is the Curiousity Rover which is exploring Mars - very cool!
- Find out how many astronauts are in space right now on this website. You can find out information about them if you click their names.


Read and watch this BBC Bitesize lesson on 'Introduction to Design'. The lesson teaches you all of the important things that a designer thinks about when they begin to make a product, including how different colours are used to represent different things. It also shows how they make models of products, being careful to choose correct shapes and sizes of different parts.

Can you complete Activity 1 to build a 3D model of your bedroom using materials you can find at home? Or you could design your dream bedroom instead!


Use the Bring The Noise game to explore how a piece of music is created by layering up different sounds. Play around by muting and adding different sounds to create your own version of one of the songs.

The Harrogate Sports Partnership have launched a Year 1/2 Infant Agility Competition for you to take part in at home this week! Over the course of the week, practise the 4 skills that are on this sheet: Bouncing, Running, Jumping and Pitching. The boxes tell you how you can score points for each skill. When you are confident, have your 'real turn' on each skill and record your score in the table at the bottom. 

If you want your scores to be entered into the competition, please email me your table of results by FRIDAY 22ND MAY.  Don't worry about what it says about teams - we will sort this at school when we know how many we have back. Good luck!! :)
