Hello Giants,

Wow, I can't believe that it is our final week of Year 2. I am so proud of every single one of you for everything you've achieved this year. We had an amazing time together in school and, even though it's really sad that we lost some of our time together at the end, I am incredibly proud of how well you have done with your learning at home. It's been lovely to see everything that you've been doing, chat to you on Zoom and speak to your mums and dads about how you've been little superstars at home. I can't wait to see you on Monday for our final marquee session - we'll have a really special last day together.

This week, our learning is all about having fun as it's the last week! We'll be writing our own stories, playing some online Computing games and choosing our own activities for most subjects, so you can do something that suits you and how you enjoy to learn. We had some activity requests on Zoom last week too, so I've added all of those on for you as choices. The page looks very long but don't worry - that's just because there's lots to choose from!

Thank you for a wonderful year, Giants. You've been a fabulous class and I will miss you all lots. Enjoy your activities this week and have an amazing summer holiday :)

1. Learning Objective: To get inspired for my work
We're going to have some fun with our writing this week and write our very own stories. Your story can be about WHATEVER YOU LIKE - it's the last week of Year 2 so just choose something that makes you excited! You can start your own idea from scratch, or choose one of the ideas below (click the link to get ideas):

The Magic Key - Write your own 'Biff and Chip style' adventure where the key glows and takes the children somewhere...

Into the Woods - Fairytale style! You need to go into the woods for something, but things start to go wrong...

You In Wonderland - Imagine you have ended up in Wonderland, like Alice. What happens and what do you see?

The Mysterious Door - A mystery door has not opened for a long time, then suddenly something emerges...

The Visitors - Late one night, some mysterious visitors arrive... Who are they and why are they here? 

Magic Carpet Ride - You find a magic carpet at the market! Where would you go and what would happen?

When you have an idea for your story, draw some labelled pictures of the characters, settings and important objects in your story. You may want to draw: good characters, bad characters, magic objects, important objects, settings for different parts of the story (e.g. Where do they start? Go? End up?) any anything else you think is important for your story! For your labels, think about adjectives, character names, describing their look and personality, place names, describing the places... the more you label, the easier it will be when you write! 

2. Learning Objective: To plan the structure of my story

A story needs to have a very clear start, middle and end. Remember - the action doesn't start straight away, it builds up slowly! It usually follows this kind of structure: starting normally and introducing characters slowly, building up to a problem, a BIG PROBLEM HAPPENING, solving the problem, then finishing with an ending that wraps everything up. 

Think about what will happen in your story - you might want to act it out with your family!! When you have a good idea of what is going to happen, draw yourself a little storyboard to remind yourself of the main parts. You could use one of these templates or just draw it on plain paper like we used to do in class:

3. Learning Objective: To write a story with a clear beginning, middle and end
Your final writing task for Year 2 is to write your very own story. Don't forget to give your story a title! This is about having fun and being proud of everything you can do now, so again, I'm not going to give any specific writing targets, just some tips below that you may want to think about:

Lots of detail about what happens - don't whizz through to the ending as fast as you can! 

Adjectives and descriptions - paint a picture in the readers' heads of your characters and settings.

Speech and read it to you family in FUN character voices!

Paragraphs - for new times and places, don't forget the indent.

Fancy punctuation - make your writing fun with   !    ?    ...    ( brackets )    " speech marks "

Illustrations - decorate your story with pictures along the way!

You can do them in your books, on your own paper or on this writing frame - however you want it to look. We had a request to do some editing on Zoom, so if you wanted to, you could act as 'editor in chief' for the first draft of your book: get a different coloured pen and do your capital letter checks, use a dictionary or the internet to check your spellings, and re-read it to see if you can add more detail. When you're done, you could write up, or even type, a super-neat final version!

Please ask your grown-ups to send me your stories when you are finished. I LOVE to read your stories and it would be lovely to collect in your final pieces of writing. If we get lots, we might print them and put them into a book for you and the next Giants class to have in your book corners :)

Extra Learning Tasks (optional)
- Design a front cover for your story.
- Write a blurb for your story.
- Swap stories with someone else in our class if you are in contact with them. You could write book reviews for each other.

Maths – Time
If you would like any additional input or activities for these Maths sessions, the content on the BBC Bitesize home learning website now matches up perfectly with the White Rose learning objectives (Monday on Bitesize is Lesson 1, Tuesday is Lesson 2, etc). 

 Learning Objective: To tell the time to 5 minutes     (tricky, half-covered before lockdown!)

Key Learning/Tips
- If the minute hand is in the first half of the clock it's a PAST time, if it's in the second half it's a TO time.
- We had briefly leart this method to help us tell the time to 5 minutes:

1) Minute Hand: Decide, is it a PAST time or a TO time? Look which half of the clock it's on.
2) Minute Hand: How many minutes PAST the top are we (for 'past' times) or how many minutes TO the top are we (for 'to' times)? Count the minutes in 5s! 
3) Hour Hand: Which hour has the hour hand just gone PAST (for 'past' times) or which hour is it going TO (for 'to' times)


2. Learning Objective: To solve problems linked to hours and days    (new learning)

Key Learning/Tips
- Drawing quarters on the clock can really help children see the links between the minutes and the phrases (e.g. "quarter of an hour")
- This Interactive Clock is a useful tool to help children see what happens as you add on minutes (e.g. Q2). Or they could turn the hands carefully on a real clock. 
- Q3 and Q4 are quite challenging for Year 2 so don't worry if children need a little help :)
- Remember on the bar model to check where each bar STARTS.

3. Learning Objective: To find durations of time     (new learning)

Key Learning/Tips
- For these questions, practising counting in 5s around the clock and moving the minute hand will be useful before children start. The Interactive Clock will be useful for this again.
- For Q2 and 3, make a big link between the number of minutes and the fraction (e.g. 30 mins is HALF an hour so we're looking for HALF of the circle shaded)
- For Q5, using a real clock to move the hands and count could be useful again. 
- Remember to draw the hands on the second clock for Mo!

4. Learning Objective: To compare durations of time      (new learning)

Key Learning/Tips
- We should always compare things in the same unit, so convert hours into minutes before you decide which is more.
- Counting around the clock is useful again for Q5. If this is tricky, draw both the 'finished' minute hand onto the 'started' clock and colour in the same between them to make a direct comparison of which is bigger.
- Drawing clocks or using the interactive clock may help with Q7. This is a tricky Q so don't worry!

5. Extra Learning Tasks (optional)
- Make your own timetable of your day. 
- Design your own clock. You could use a paper plate or draw it on this template.
- Challenge yourself with these extra Time Mastery Challenge or these Time Challenge Cards.

- Solve a set of questions from our Fluency list (choose Red, Amber, Green or GO - or more if you want!)

Science: Making Links

Learning Objective: To understand how animals and plants can survive in a habitat
It sounds like lots of people's favourite Science lesson this year was when we made the habitats out of shoeboxes, so I thought it would be nice to give you the opportunity to do it again for a different habitat :) Have a look at the BBC Bitesize section on Habitats and the Environment. Choose a habitat that you'd like to learn about and read/watch the information on the page. You might also want to use the links below to find out more:

When you have some information, create your own image or model of the habitat. Add labels to say which animals and plants you can find there, or even better, add some writing to explain how they survive. You don't have to use a shoebox again if you don't want to or you don't have one. Here's some ideas of how you could present your learning:

Theme (Geography)

Learning Objective: To know the human and physical geography of another country
I know that lots of you have a favourite country - maybe somewhere you've been on holiday, somewhere you've seen on TV or somewhere you've always dreamed of going!! So, your challenge for this week is to do some of your own research to learn some information about a country of your choice. When you are done, you can present your information however you like! Here's some ideas:

- Posters (or lift the flap posters)
- Fortune tellers
- Videos
- Labelled pictures or models of your country
- Top Trumps card for your country
- Same v Different grid for your country and the UK
- Postcard from your country

- Non-chronological report about your country
- Leaflet to persuade us to visit your country
- Or your own idea!

When you're researching, you might want to find out: food and drink, language, clothing, capital city, flag, famous landmarks, famous people, location (e.g. which continent?), interesting places to visit, animals and plants, or just some other fun facts!

Optional Extra Activities:

Lots of things for you to choose from in Art this week! Some people have requested doing favourite activities again, and I've put on a few new projects for you too. Choose whichever you like from these choices:




We seemed to really enjoy the coding games last week (even if they were a little tricky!) so heres some more games and activities for you to keep developing your coding skills:

Hour Of Code - Choose another step-by-step coding challenge like Flappy Bird! Choices include Dance Party, Star Wars, Frozen and more! James recommends "Coding Town" :)

Blockly Movie - Add 'movies' (shapes) to create a picture. Change the position of the shapes by changing the 'x' and 'y' numbers.

Blockly Music - Keep practising 'when functions' and add the right music notes to compose a song (HINT: Press 'Help' if you need to see the music notes again)

Code Monster! (Challenge) - Play with real-life Java Script computer code. Edit the numbers and the colours in the code to change the squares.

If the previous weeks have been a little tricky, you could choose:

Blockly Animal Puzzle - Practise attaching blocks of code to the correct places to solve the quiz.

Blockly Turtle - Add numbers and directions to your coding block to make your turtle draw different shapes.

Or... ask a grown-up to pretend to be a robot again, like the Jame Sandwich Bot, then write your own algorithm (instructions) to tell them how to do something - maybe how to do draw something, or how to make something from Lego. Test out your algorithm and debug it if your 'robot' makes mistakes!


It's the last week so we are going to dance and have some fun! Choose:

- Have fun dancing along to some Go Noodle videos!

- Play a game of musical statues with your family.

- Make up your own dance routine to your favourite song. 

- Follow one of the Dance Alongs or Dance Tutorials on Kidz Bop UK
