Please find below a selection of work for week commencing Monday 17th May if you are unable to be in school due to self-isolation or other Covid-19 related reasons:

Use Oxford Owl to access reading books at your child's book band:

Continue to follow your child's current programme for Phonics learning:

Set 2 Lessons-  Read Write Inc - Features daily videos on a new sound.

Set 3 Sounds - Read Write Inc - Features daily videos on a new sound

Read Longer Words - Read Write Inc - The next step from Set 3, applying our knowledge of sounds to work out longer words.

Investigating Alternative Spellings - PhonicsPlay - Scroll down to Phase 5c and work through the 'Investigating Alternative Spellings' activities at your own pace. I'd recommend one activity per day e.g. a Phoneme Spotter one day, Word Sort the next day, Best Bet the next day. You can log in for free at the moment using the username and password on the PhonicsPlay homepage.

Phase 6 Spelling Rules - PhonicsPlay - These games allow practice of the more complex spelling rules for Year 2, and are the next step from the Alternative Spellings work. You can go through these games at your own pace. 



This week, we are writing our own versions of the story of The Stone Cutter.

Task 1 - LO: To plan my own version of a story
If you need to remind yourself of the story, you can watch this video. This week, we are going to write our own versions of the story. See if you can think of a new sequence of 6 things that the main character wishes to be, with the sixth one being them wishing to become a human again. It might be helpful to think of your 5th wish first - what could be overpowered by a human? Maybe a tree being cut down, water being put into a bottle, or a vegetable being eaten? Plan out your ideas on a piece of plain paper or on this template.

Task 2 - LO: To write the start and middle of my story
Use your plan from yesterday to begin your own version of The Stone Cutter. Think about how you want to introduce your character at the start, before you dive into the wishes and the storyline. Try to include:

- Story language, e.g. 'Once there lived...'
- Repeating parts of the story, e.g. 'He wished to be...'  'and a _____ he became.'
- Descriptive language, e.g. 'He became a strong, powerful emperor'.

Task 3 - LO: To write the end of my story
Continue your story until you get to the end of your plan. When you write the ending, try to use a very clear and powerful 'ending sentence' to make it clear to the reader that the story is finished. For example:

'He never wished to be anything else again.'
'He lived happily as a stone cutter for the rest of his life.'
'He realised how lucky he was to be a stone cutter.'
