English - Class Novel week

This week we will be carrying out a class novel week. I know a lot of you are already intrigued to find out what happens at the end of the story If you have already read it all please do not spoil the ending for the others.

Monday - taught session on Zoom at 9.40am

LO: To make inferences about the text.
We will begin by recapping what has happened so far in the story. If you get a chance before the zoom it might be helpful to have a look back to remind yourself ready for our discussion.
We will read chapter 10 (The White Prince) and then discuss and answer the following questions:
  1. How did Bertie describe the outings him and Millie had on a Sunday?
  2. On page 94, how does the author show that the café owner is worried about Bertie’s actions?
  3. What reasons does the café owner give as to why the Circus has finished?
  4. When they found the house where Monsieur Merlot lived what was it like? Use the text to help you.
  5. On page 100, How do we know that Millie was scared of the White Lion?

Tuesday - independent session (11am ish)

LO: To write in character
Today I would like you to look back through the book and remember what has happened so far.

Can you then write a diary by Bertie about some of the key events in the story so far?
You may want to include some of the following:
Details about when he lived in Africa and discovered the white lion, his time at boarding school in England and meeting Millie, a description of the trenches and the injury he sustained while on the front line in France and his Sunday day trips out of the hospital.

Wednesday – taught session on zoom at 9.40am

LO: To use evidence from the text to support my ideas.

We will read chapter 11 (A Miracle, A Miracle!) and the discuss and answer the following:

1) Find and copy a phrase on page 101 that shows Millie is nervous about being close to the White Lion.
2) How did the driver of the ambulance, that Millie waved down, feel about giving them a lift back to the village?
3) What did they discuss while sat at the table outside the café?
4) Why do you think the crowd of people followed them? What kind of distance did they follow? What does this mean?
5) Who did Bertie have to persuade to allow their plans to go ahead with the White Lion?

Thursday – independent session (11am ish)

LO: To write a summary of a chapter and to make a prediction about the text.

Re read up to the beginning of chapter 11.
After that write a summary of the chapter - What are the main events? Which characters have been involved?
Also as we near the end of the story make a prediction about what you think will happen next in the book.  The next chapter is called 'The Butterfly Lion' what might this mean? What do you think happens to the Lion? Why are Butterflies mentioned?

Friday - taught session on Zoom at 9.40am

LO: To empathise with a character.

We will read chapter 12 (The Butterfly Lion) and then discuss and answer the following:

1) Look at the paragraph beginning, ‘We never had children of our own – just The White Prince’ How does Millie feel about never having children and how does the author show this?
2)’Bertie grieved on for weeks, months….’ What does the word ‘grieved’ mean? Can you use this word in a sentence?
3) How does Bertie feel when he comes up with the idea of a tribute to the Lion? How does the author show this?
4) How does the author create a feeling of triumph when explaining the finished tribute?
