Mrs Parker's Science W/C: 5th January

Mrs Parker - 05 Jan 2021

Hi Centaurs! Happy New Year to you all!

This half-term in Science our topic is Sound. Our first session for this week is thinking about the question, 'What is Sound?'

Lesson Objective
  • To describe and explain sound sources
Success Criteria
I can identify and describe sound sources.
I can explain how sources of sound vibrate, creating sound.

First, have a look at your knowledge organiser for this topic. It has all the key vocabulary and key facts which we will cover during this unit.
  -Knowledge Organiser Sound.docx-

Read The Sound Collector by Roger McGough.

Now watch this animation of the poem which includes sound effects.

Which version is more effective? Why? Do you think that hearing the sounds adds to the experience of the poem?

Now watch this BBC clip and list any key words you hear about making sounds.
Sounds made from different types of musical instruments - KS2 Science - BBC Bitesize

Look at the list of sound words on the PowerPoint. How many did you manage to pick up?

  -Lesson 1 PPT.pptx-

Carry on looking at the PowerPoint to find out about what vibration is and its role in making sounds.

Activity 1: If you are able to, place rice on a drum to see the vibrations when you bang the drum and use a tuning fork and place it in water to see the vibrations through the water.

Activity 2: Go for a walk around your house and identify the different sounds that you can hear.  Try and work out what is vibrating to make the sounds you can hear, e.g. It is the metal of a bell that vibrates when a bell rings, the strings that vibrate when you pluck a guitar, people's vocal chords which vibrate when they speak.

Complete this sheet to describe the sounds you heard and explain what was vibrating to make each sound.
