English and Maths Home Learning WC 22nd February

11 Feb 2021

Hi Phoenix,

I hope you all had a fantastic half term and manage to get some well-deserved (notice the hyphen) rest. Hopefully you are all feeling ready to get back to learning and remember every day that passes means it's one day closer to use being back in school together!

This week is going to be a little bit different than usual as I am on a two day remote course on Zoom so on Thursday and Friday we won't be able to do our live Zoom sessions. You will still have sharing assembly on Friday but our other meetings will be recorded for this week. I will still be regularly checking Teams and responding to your assignments during these days and I am sure it will be seeing your efforts through the assignments you complete that keep me smiling.

I have outlined what the sessions are for the week below.

Take care and I will see you on Zoom.

Take care and stay safe,

Mrs Foster smiley

Maths - Algebra and measures

This week we will be continuing our work on algebra. Once we come to the end of algebra you will move on to the topic of measures.  As well as the video links, flashback 4 and activities I have added a true or false question each day and some problem solving and reasoning activities if you would like some extra challenges. The problem solving and reasoning activities are meant to be for the whole unit so if you choose to do one please don't do too many in one go.

Problem Solving and Reasoning

English

This week we will begin by reading chapter 18 of the class novel and respond to questions. We will then be working on writing a postcard in the character of a 'fairytale baddy'. We will find the shape of a postcard before thinking about the different types of wicked characters. Then there will be a couple of sentence stacking days before moving onto independently writing your own postcard next week.

Monday - taught session on Zoom @ 11am

LO: To develop an understanding of themes within a text.

Today we will read chapter 18 and work together to answers the questions below.

1) What do you think has happened to Shmuel’s father?
2) Why do you think Shmuel is reluctant to correct any of Bruno’s errors and misconceptions about what is going on? Can you think of more than one reason?
3) Do you think Bruno should go ahead with his plan to visit the camp?
4) Why do the boys think it’s a ‘sensible plan’? Do you agree with them?
5) How does the author create a sense of impending danger?
6) ‘It would be a great adventure. Our final adventure.’ What might these sentences imply is going to happen next?

Tuesday - taught session on Zoom @ 8.45am

LO: To find the shape of a postcard.

Today we will work together to look at the shape of a postcard and begin to put together the structure. We will focus on a model text written by Jack from Jack and the Beanstalk and spend time picking it apart so that we are confident with the structure of the text.

Wednesday - recorded session through link on Teams (9.30ish)

LO: To meet prisoners from Fairytale world.

Today we will think about differnt fairytale baddies (some of them you might have to think carefully about the 'bad' side of their character). You will then be asked to think about what might happen/be said if they were arrested and interviewed by the police.

Thursday - recorded session through link on Teams (9ish)

LO: To write effective sentences for our postcard.

Today you will follow a recorded sentence stacking session to take you through the beginning of writing our postcards. Follow the structure carefully so that you can develop your vocabulary vault and structure your sentences carefully.
