The Arts - updated December 2020

13 Sep 2019

As a school we are committed to developing the children's skills and enjoyment across of a range of arts activites, as both part of the taught curriculum and also across all areas fo school life.We have skilled staff within the school who lead art and design. There are an exciting range of skills and techniques included in both art & design planning and cross curricular planning. Sequenced planning develops knowledge as well as awide range of techniques. Links are made across the full curriculum to ensure that children gain substantial knowldege over time.

A minimum of 12% curriculum time is spent on the Arts across music, art, dance and drama. We also run a wide range of after school clubs related to the arts.

The school has a tradition of presenting performances throughout the year to parents, Governors and the wider community. These include every child taking part in a Christmas production and whole Key Stage 2 performances in the summer. Arts days or events are organised where children and staff develop skills and understanding by working with professionals for example Harlow Carr mural project and Harrogate Theatre. The arts are showcased in special sharing assemblies with parents.

Our choir has taken part in a wide range of concerts, including The Young Voices Concert at Sheffield Arena and The Royal Hall Charity Concert which the school leads. The choir has an excellent reputation in the wider community.

Children from in KS1 and KS2 are taught by a professional music teacher through Primary PPA. Sequenced units of learning are followed for each year group to build on learning in a sequenced progression. Links to the termly theme when planning lessons. Knowledge of music is developed using instruments, voice and body, as well as studying genres of music and musicians.
