PHSE and RSE
The main focus of Personal Social Health and Economic Education (PSHE) and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) in our school is to teach the fundamental building blocks for an awareness of how to be safe in our world and an understanding of how to live healthily. It is also about enabling children to make and maintain relationships with others, to understand about human emotions, and to feel good about themselves and the choices they make. This involves helping children to gain knowledge, develop skills and form positive beliefs and attitudes. We aim for children to develop the confidence to talk, listen and think about their own feelings and relationships, as well as promoting equality for all. We acknowledge that, in order for children to embrace the challenges of creating a happy and successful adult life, pupils need knowledge that will enable them to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships and to build their self-efficacy. We understand that high quality, age-appropriate teaching of these subjects can help prepare pupils to develop resilience, and to know how and when to ask for help throughout their lives.

We think it is extremely important that children understand the concept of CONSENT. At a basic level, consent means asking for and waiting to hear a ‘yes’. School aged children are never too young to learn about the concept of seeking and giving permission. If a child wants to borrow something from another friend, they must get permission. If a child wants to hug their friend, they should check if their friend is OK with that first. Linking permission-seeking to physical contact is an important part of safeguarding children. They need to be taught about boundaries, saying no to unwanted touch and seeking help when they are worried or upset by anything they have been asked to do or by how they have been touched.
