Modern Foreign Languages
Intent Statement
At Killinghall, we believe that high-quality language education fosters pupils’ curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world. Language learning gives our pupils the opportunity to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It provides an opportunity for children to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and appreciate cultural differences. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study languages in high school and beyond, and give them the confidence to work in other countries should they wish.
At Killinghall, we have opted to focus on the French language, although awareness of other languages and cultures is also celebrated. French studies follow the National Curriculum and the Language Angels scheme of work. When a child learns a second language, they indirectly absorb the mechanics of language, it supports understanding of grammar, improves listening skills and teaches effective communication. For this reason, we feel it is important to teach languages from KS1.
In French we aim to ensure that all pupils:
-
Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources.
-
Speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.
-
Can write at varying length, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt.
-
Listen attentively to the spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding.
-
Explore the patterns and sounds of language through songs and rhymes, linking the spelling, sound and meaning of words.

Our curriculum instils a love of learning in our pupils, whilst helping them to develop into compassionate, respectful young people. Children are encouraged to share their kindness with others through the choices they make. |
Children develop confidence through our curriculum and cultivate a belief that hard work and effort leads to success. Our inclusive curriculum ensures that all learners forge positive trusting relationships with staff, built on mutual respect. |
Our children have opportunities to make sense of the increasingly complex and rapidly changing world in which they live. They are encouraged to show integrity and to understand what fairness means each learner getting what they need to succeed. |
